Abruzzo

A region of undiscovered natural beauty

Abruzzo is probably one of the lesser known places in Italy, but we hope that we can tempt you to come and see this beautiful undiscovered area, and once you have visited we hope you will return year after year to find out for yourselves the reason why we love Abruzzo.
But for now here is a little background information to wet your appetite.

The region has four provinces, L’Aquilla, Teramo, Chieti and Pescara.  Pescara is the main town; it has a large commercial centre and fabulous designer shops (ladies, take an empty suitcase!).  It is also the main coastal resort in the area with a 16-kilometre stretch of white sandy beaches, which is quite popular with the Italians during July and August.  Pescara also has a good airport with daily flights from London – Stanstead, Milan, Rome, Paris and more. However we must stress that this is a provincial airport and does not offer quite the same facilities as our major airports, in other words don’t leave all your gift and souvenir shopping until you get there, as you may be disappointed.

Everywhere you look in Abruzzo you will find stunning scenery and amazing views. You can stand on the beach and gaze inland to majestic snow capped mountains.

The Appenine Mountains run through Abruzzo with the Gran Sasso Mountain being its highest peak.  If you fancy taking a trip to Rome, which is just over an hours drive away, you will go through this mountain via a 12 kilometre road tunnel – definitely a worthwhile experience! Still on the subject of road links, San Marino, Rimini, Florence and Naples are all within easy reach, taking you through regions like Le Marche and Tuscany.

The old towns of L’Aquila, Sulmona and Teramo are probably the most well known of the region and are well worth a visit, so too are the pretty medieval citadels perched high on the hills like icing on a cake, one of our favourites is Citta Sant’Angelo which has the most incredible views across the countryside to the coast.

Tortoreto Lido is the area where most of our holiday apartments can be found, this resort is the perfect place to spend a holiday. The beaches are ideal for children with safe calm waters. There are designated areas with restaurants and bars where sun loungers and sun umbrellas may be hired; most of these have toilets and showers, a must when you have little ones.

Because of its miles and miles of flat promenades and roads it’s the ideal place to hire a bicycle or two and go for a ride, take in the scenery and soak up the sun. Then shop and have a drink at one of the many beach-side bars where you will be amazed at the friendliness of the people.

For us the whole eating (and shopping) is just the most pleasurable experience, everyone takes time to chat and nothing is too much trouble, and children are welcome everywhere.
We must just add here that the food is just the best! Don’t expect lavish menus though, especially in the little restaurants that are off the beaten track, normally you just go in and ask for anything you fancy or just leave it to the experts. Believe us, you will be pleasantly surprised and you won’t go away feeling hungry. Then of course there are the ice creams, they’re just too tempting!

Behind the coastal resort of Tortoreto Lido is the old town of Tortoreto Alto, this old town sits on a hill and is well worth a visit, just wander around the charming little streets, soak up the atmosphere and feast your eyes on the incredible views.

As you can probably tell we just love this area and cannot speak too highly about it. With its perfect climate, historical places of interest, fantastic food and wine, the friendliest people you could wish to meet we feel it is a great choice for your holiday destination.

But don’t just take our word for it – come and see for yourselves, we think you’ll be hooked too!
