Mantova

In the 16th century the poet ‘Tasso’ wrote “this is a very beautiful city and one worth travelling a thousand miles to see”.
In the 18th century the city was besieged by Napoleon and was under French rule until 1814 when it once again returned to Austria. It was not until 1866 that Mantova finally became part of Italy, by declaration of the King of Sardinia.
Possibly amongst the most historical cities in Europe, which is clearly evident from the abundance of Palaces, Museums and Churches that are nearly all accessible to the thousands of visitors that travel here every year.
Mantuan cuisine, well known throughout Italy as the “The cuisine of Princes and Commoners”, is a result of the connection of court cuisine with that of the peasants. It is both refined and simple and characterised by a use of local products found in this region. Mantova has an abundance of excellent restaurants to suit all pockets - simply a gastronomers delight!
Mantova is surrounded on three sides by artificial lakes created during the 12th century, which on a typical summers day are wonderful to visit. Because of the flat terrain it is ideal for anyone interested in cycling or walking, there are some breathtaking views to be seen and if the going gets a little tiring in the hot sun then why not stop off for a drink and taste some of the delicious wines that this region is so famous for.
Mantova also plays host to the Festival Letteratura, one of the most renowned literary events in Europe and once again this beautiful city becomes alive with interesting events.
Mantova can be reached by road from the A4 Autostrada Milan – Venice, it is within easy reach of Milan, Venice, Bologna, Verona, and the Italian Lakes.
